Quick one here. I frequently help beginners set up their Mac's for development at hackathons. The first step is always to install the Xcode command line tools. These include:
- gcc (llvm)
and various other necessary tools.
Previously, Xcode had to be installed from the AppStore, which is a whopping 2.5gb's, or the right package had to be found behind Apple's developer gate. Thankfully, OS X 10.9 Mavericks introduced a quick and painless way to install them!
xcode-select --install and follow the prompts! Follow up with Homebrew for a straight shot to everything you need.
